Florida Homeschool Law

Florida State Standards and Common Core

Florida’s implementation of the Common Core has begun to sputter. The Florida Board of Education opted not to implement the Common Core’s reading samples, student writing sample, and recommended structure of math classes. Additionally, Governor Rick Scott withdrew Florida from PARCC, and Florida will design its own Common Core–aligned assessments.

Common Core Implications

Under the home education law in Florida, homeschoolers are required to undergo an annual evaluation consisting of either a portfolio review, a stardardized test administered by a certified Florida teacher, or an evaluation by a Florida-certified psychologist, or some other mutually agreed upon evaluation measurement. There is potential for the standardized achievement tests under this option to impact homeschoolers as more and more test publishers revise their tests to be aligned with the common core.
