Illinois does not require families to notify the state of their decision to homeschool. There are state required subjects. The IL government does not conduct any state assessments of homeschoolers.

Very few states have laws that prevent parents from homeschooling their children. Illinois does not prohibit parents from homeschooling based on their legal or criminal history. Only two states, Pennsylvania and Arkansas, prohibit some parents based on their criminal history or by someone living in the home.

There is no required level of education for parents in Illinois to educate their children at home.

Illinois State Standards and Common Core

At the beginning of the 2013–14 school year, Illinois’ previous academic standards were thrown out and replaced by the Common Core State Standards. The advance of the Common Core in Illinois is also marked by collaboration between secondary and postsecondary schools to create a streamlined curriculum from high school through college.

State Subject Requirements

Homeschooled children must be “taught the branches of education taught to children of corresponding age and grade in the public schools.” These subjects include language arts, mathematics, biological and physical sciences, social sciences, fine arts, and physical development and health. Instruction must be in English.
