Indiana does not require families to notify the state of their decision to homeschool. IN does not require that home educators take specific subjects or classes. The IN government does not conduct any state assessments of homeschoolers.

Very few states have laws that prevent parents from homeschooling their children. Indiana does not prohibit parents from homeschooling based on their legal or criminal history. Only two states, Pennsylvania and Arkansas, prohibit some parents based on their criminal history or by someone living in the home.

There is no required level of education for parents in Indiana to educate their children at home.

Indiana was the first state to reject not only consortia testing but also the Common Core as a whole.

State Subject Requirements

Parents must provide children with “instruction equivalent” to that in public schools. However, homeschools are exempt from the curriculum requirements laid out for public schools, and “equivalent instruction” has never been defined. Instruction must be provided in the English language.
