Montana requires homeschooling families to submit annual reports. There are state required subjects. The MT government does not conduct any state assessments of homeschoolers.

Very few states have laws that prevent parents from homeschooling their children. Montana does not prohibit parents from homeschooling based on their legal or criminal history. Only two states, Pennsylvania and Arkansas, prohibit some parents based on their criminal history or by someone living in the home.

There is no required level of education for parents in Montana to educate their children at home.

Montana was the last state to adopt the Common Core, and the state has left most of the implementation process in the hands of local school districts.

Common Core Implications

It appears that there is little chance that Montana’s homeschool students will have to take Common Core standardized assessments in the near future. Both recent efforts to pass legislation requiring homeschoolers to take state assessments have been decisively defeated.

State Subject Requirements

Instruction must be provided in "the subjects required of public schools as a basic instructional program." This basic instructional program for public schools is set by the board of public education.
