Utah requires homeschooling families to submit annual reports. UT does not require that home educators take specific subjects or classes. The UT government does not conduct any state assessments of homeschoolers.

Very few states have laws that prevent parents from homeschooling their children. Utah does not prohibit parents from homeschooling based on their legal or criminal history. Only two states, Pennsylvania and Arkansas, prohibit some parents based on their criminal history or by someone living in the home.

There is no required level of education for parents in Utah to educate their children at home.

Utah State Standards and Common Core

Utah is not a member of either of the federally funded testing consortia; however, Utah has been bold in its implementation of the Common Core, providing teachers with recommended curricula and developing its own Common Core–aligned assessments.

State Subject Requirements

None. Parents were previously required to provide instruction in the same subjects required to be taught in the state’s public schools, but this requirement was repealed back in 2014.
