Fun Thanksgiving Trivia and Facts

We believe there is no such thing as a 'day off from homeschooling.' Every day is an opportunity to learn and develop! So, we have 5 quick Thanksgiving facts and trivia we hope you will appreciate!
1. Did you know that presidents pardon turkeys on Thanksgiving? Unfortunately, nearly all of the presidentially pardoned turkeys are now dead due to the fact that the turkeys used for Thanksgiving are bred for the table and not for the ability to live long and healthy lives. 2. It is true that before the first Thanksgiving, pilgrims were starving. However, it was not because they didn't know how to work the land. And it was not because they had 'bad harvests.' They were starving because they spent all their time trying to find gold and couldn't be bothered to farm. Read the full story at U.S. History.
3. Grenada, a country in the Caribbean, celebrates Thanksgiving Day for an unusual reason. They don't celebrate Thanksgiving because of the harvest season, but to celebrate the American Invasion of Grenada. Read more from the official Wikipedia article.
4. Did you know that CBS isn't officially authorized to broadcast the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? In fact, in 2012 Macy purposefully rerouted the parade so that it would be more difficult for CBS to broadcast it. Read the Wiki article.
5. The first Thanksgiving in North America was held in 1578 in what is now Canada. This happened 43 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock. Source and more info from this Diffen comparison.
