How to Get Your Child Excited About Math

Getting children interested in Mathematics

It is difficult to get children excited about a topic like math. I think this is because the topic is very literal and children are creative thinkers.

Because math is a topic that people tend to avoid once they have a negative experience, it is all the more important to make sure your child is having fun. A conscious effort to make mathematics fun can ensure that your child has a positive relationship with the subject.

Homeschool Math Success

This topic is very important to me because it is personal. I was never a fan of math growing up. However, I was determined that my children would not have the same experience that I did. By using these simple tips, I not only taught my children to love math, but my oldest son is making it a big part of his life.

His test scores were so high that, in fifth grade, our local middle school invited him to be part of their mathematics competition team. Each week, his math team competes with the math team from other middle schools in the county. Not only is he a great member of the team, he loves the accomplishment of competing with children who are older than him.

Even though you may not think it's possible now, you can help your child get excited about math. All it takes is a little bit of creativity on your part. Here are some great ideas that will have your child more excited about learning math, even if they have had a negative experience with it in the past.

Strategies in Teaching Mathematics

Teaching math is typically approached with a dry personality. I think this is because many people who are good at math have a hidden vendetta against it. It isn't hard to develop a love/hate relationship with the topic, even if you understand it. Not only does it require a lot of thought, there is a set way each problem should be approached, and creativity in the subject is frowned upon.

Even if you do not like math yourself, you need to approach it with a bit of excitement for your child's sake. It is easy for children to pick up on your feelings, and translate them into their own lives. Making math fun for your child will not only create a positive future for them, it will also bring you a sense of pride when you see them connect with the topic and succeed in something they have tried hard to accomplish.

How to Teach Mathematics in an Interesting Way

The relationship your children have with math depends on how the adults around them approach the topic. If it is obvious that mathematics is a topic they despise, the child will pick up on this energy. By approaching in a positive way, regardless of your personal feelings, you can help your child develop and exciting bond with math and the various components of it.

How to Get Your Child Excited about Math

If you want your child to become excited about math, you have to provide them with fun learning options. Memorizing math facts that your child will need on a regular basis is important to the success of their career in taking math.

Make flashcards for your child using Flash Clash Card Machine. These cards should contain addition facts they should know by memory, multiplication facts from 1 x 1 to 12 x 12.  You can also add algebra equations they will need to know by memory. These can be used on a regular basis to build a strong math memory.

Online Math Resources and Games

By using math games for your child to expand upon their knowledge, or practice concepts they have already learned, you can make math fun for your child regardless of their age or experience. There are thousands of resources available to you online, and a lot of them are free.

Here are some popular resources for parents. Not only are they great for helping you understand the concepts your child is learning, they will help your child build a stronger relationship with these concepts as well.

Education.com offers a lot of fun activities for kids. You can filter the activities by academic year to find the exact grade level your child needs. You will find fun activities, worksheets, and games that your child will love!

If your child loves being active, Qball.com has great games that involve bouncy balls that are numbered from 1 to ten. They provide instructions for the game using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

If you are looking for some easily to set up math games for your child, Frugal Fun 4 Boys offers 20 fun games that your child will love. Sarah is an amazing homeschool mom who writes her blog to help other homeschooling parents develop fun learning activities. I turn to her often when I need ideas to make learning fun. She is not your average homeschool mom. She teaches her children the way they learn best, by having fun.

HomeschoolMath.net provides high-quality math worksheets that let your child test what they have learned in all their fun. It is sad to say, even the most fun homeschool requires some traditional learning activities. Your child may learn faster and more effectively with Sarah's Math Baseball or the Lego activities she shares, but you have to have completed course work to put in your records. Unfortunately, even if your child has learned everything required by their grade, the state (usually) requires physical proof.

Free Online Math Games

If you feel that your child has gained an understanding of a math concept, it is time to test it out. Of course, we don't want to turn to pencil and paper just yet. Online games allow your child to demonstrate the knowledge they have gained and they can continue practicing until you feel they are confident enough to sit their desk and demonstrate on paper.

Math Game Time is a homeschool parent's best friend when it is time to work on math skills. Their games are geared toward children from pre-k to 6th grade. Your children will love the bright colored game graphics. It is also a great way to get excited about learning math facts.

Math Play Ground is a great place for children to master math concepts. They accommodate addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, and algebra. They have a few hundred math games for your child to pick from, so math never gets boring.

Knowledge Adventure provides your child with more fun games that will keep their mind active. Your child does not know it, but every time they play games on this website, they are memorizing math facts.

Wrapping It Up

Making math fun for your child not only makes learning easier for them, it makes teaching them more fun. It is important that you help your child to develop a positive relationship with math because it is an easy subject to turn your back on.

You will use math concepts throughout your entire life. It doesn't matter if they are managing their household budget or writing a quarterly budget review for their boss, math will always have a place in their life.

Since math is unavoidable, why not do your best to make it a welcome addition?
