Beowulf is our first great epic. It is an epitomized history of the life of the Teutonic races. It brings vividly before us our forefathers of pre-Alfredian eras, in their love of war, of sea, and of adventure.
Reading the epic poem of Beowulf gives us a glimpse into the lives of our oldest English-speaking ancestors.
We have been reading and studying Beowulf at home lately, and I wanted to share some of the great public domain resources I found:
- Beowulf- an Anglo-Saxon epic poem (an excellent translation with glossary and plot overview)
- Stories of Beowulf Told to Children (a paraphrase of the poem)
- Stories of Beowulf Audio download (mp3’s by Librivox)
I have also been creating a set of notebooking pages to go with each of the three parts of the poem. You can download the first set from my blog- These Temporary Tents.
